Our Initiatives

The Angela Makiya Foundation Focuses on Thoughtful Impact

The Angela Makiya Foundation supports children and families affected by cancer through intentional programs that provide emotional reassurance, practical relief, and moments of light during an overwhelming time. Each initiative is rooted in lived experience and designed to meet families where they are, without overpromising or overcomplicating support.

Our programs focus on thoughtful impact, dignity, and presence, recognizing that even small acts of care can make a meaningful difference.

Color With Courage

Rather than centering illness, the coloring books focus on beauty, imagination, and everyday joy. Designs include elements such as flowers, cities, and illustrations that allow children to simply be children, even in a medical setting.

How It Works
  • Custom coloring books are designed and produced by the foundation
  • Free distribution through partner hospitals
  • Staff help place books directly with children in treatment
  • Distributed during supported hospital visits and events
Who It Serves

Children undergoing cancer treatment in Detroit hospitals.

Impact Goal

To provide moments of calm, creativity, and emotional relief for children navigating treatment, while reminding them that beauty and joy still exist in their world.

One Month of Relief

The One Month of Relief Program provides grocery assistance to families actively navigating a cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy treatment. This initiative is designed to alleviate one small but meaningful financial burden during an already overwhelming time.

What Support Looks Like
  • One family per quarter receives a $500 grocery gift card
  • Support is provided as a one time gift to ensure fairness and sustainability
  • The program is intentionally limited to allow for thoughtful, impactful giving
How Families Are Selected

Families may apply directly or be nominated by others on their behalf. Applications are reviewed based on need, eligibility, and available funding. Support is provided one time per family, with no emergency exceptions.

Who It Serves

Families in Detroit actively navigating cancer treatment.

Impact Goal

To provide practical relief that allows families to focus on healing, rest, and togetherness, without worrying about basic necessities for a moment in time.
